Le Valrose
A century-old heritage

The history of Valrose

The story begins in the early 1900s with the Cottier family of Rougemont and the development of the railway built by the Montreux-Oberland Bernois (MOB) company.

The fate of the Pays-d'Enhaut was transformed by train travel, which opened up the region and attracted tourists who marvelled at the beauty of the exceptional Alpine landscapes.

The Valrose opened in 1904 and benefited from the MOB and the boom in mountain tourism. Within a few years, the Valrose guesthouse became an institution that left its mark on the history of the region. The Cottier family of Rougemont remained the sole managers for over a century.

At the foot of Mount Rübli, the waters of the Sarine River tirelessly polish its pebbles in the hollows of the green or snow-covered mountain pastures, depending on the season. In the evening, the glowing light gave its name to the village, which is now one of the most beautiful in Switzerland.

You will fall under the spell of the Romanesque church built in the 11th century by the monks of Cluny, the 16th-century castle and the narrow streets lined with traditional chalets richly decorated and adorned with flowers. Time stands still, and the Belle Epoque train in front of the miniature station takes us on a journey through authentic history.

Sharing and passing on excellence

Decades pass, but Le Valrose remains loyal to the residents of Rougemont.

Generations come and go, gathering on the terrace in summer and around the fireplace in winter. Simple pleasures are shared. A historic part of village life, Le Valrose cultivates a family spirit, welcoming and attentive to quality.

In December 2025, after some renovation work, Valrose returns to its roots: a place for meeting and sharing, inspired by generosity and the art of mountain living, ready to write a new chapter in its history.

In 2024, Ermes Elsener took over the management of the establishment. With a wealth of experience in the hotel industry, guided by excellence and attentive listening to customers, he embodies a new generation of hoteliers committed to authenticity, conviviality and the art of hospitality.

In 2021, Chef Benoît Carcenat, Meilleur Ouvrier de France 2015, inaugurated La Table gastronomique du Valrose, awarded 18 points by Gault&Millau. In 2023, he was awarded two Michelin stars and the title of Best Chef of the Year.

In 2017, a new family took over after three years of renovation and expansion work. Le Valrose then began a new chapter in its long history, while remaining true to its values. The institution remains authentic and welcoming, open to all for morning coffee, lunch on the terrace on sunny days, a convivial aperitif or dinner after a memorable day of skiing.
