The story began in the early 20th century with the development of the railway line built by the Montreux-Oberland Bernois Company (MOB).
The destiny of the Pays-d’Enhaut was transformed: railway opened up the region to tourists dazzled by its natural and cultural beauty.
Le Valrose opened in 1904 with the beginning of mountain tourism and quickly became an institution. The Cottier de Rougemont family was the sole manager for over a century.
At the foot of the Rübli mountain, the water of the Sarine River gently polishes its pebbles in the hollow of the verdant or snow-covered alpine pastures depending on the season. In the evening, the special red light gave the village its name.
You will fall under the charm of the Romanesque church built in the 11th century by the monks of Cluny, the 16th century castle and the narrow streets with their richly decorated traditional chalets. Time seems to stand still and only the charming small train and its miniature station connect this place to the outside world.
Decades pass, but Le Valrose remains loyal to the residents of Rougemont.
Generations come and go, gathering on the terrace in summer and around the fireplace in winter. Simple pleasures are shared. A historic part of village life, Le Valrose cultivates a family atmosphere that is friendly and attentive to quality.
In December 2025, after some renovation work, Le Valrose returns to its roots: a place for meeting and sharing, inspired by generosity and the art of mountain living, ready to write a new chapter in its history.
In 2024, Ermes Elsener took over the management of the establishment. With a wealth of experience in the hotel industry, guided by excellence and attentive listening to customers, he embodies a new generation of hoteliers committed to authenticity, conviviality and the art of hospitality.
In 2021, Chef Benoît Carcenat, Meilleur Ouvrier de France 2015, inaugurated La Table gastronomique du Valrose, awarded 18 points by Gault&Millau. In 2023, he was awarded two Michelin stars and the title of Best Chef of the Year.
In 2017, a new family took over after three years of renovation and expansion work. Le Valrose is now writing a new chapter in its long history while remaining true to its values. The establishment remains authentic and welcoming, open to all for morning coffee, lunch on the terrace on sunny days, a convivial aperitif or dinner after a memorable day of skiing.
